When it comes to camping, roughing it is not my thing. The last time I spent a night at a campsite and sauntered up with my rolling suitcase and Toms wedges (those are sporty, right?), my friends informed me that what I was doing was in fact, ‘glamping’.
That’s not to say that I don’t love camping. Spending time outdoors, reading books in the sun, sleeping in tents and cooking over a fire – I do it all, happily. It’s just that I like to spruce it up a bit, like using an inflatable blow up mattress and having someone else hook my bait for me. When it comes to food, roasted hotdogs and s’mores just don’t cut it. So when the hobo pie maker found its way at our campfire I thought, “Surely there is a more adult, foodie way of doing this”.
So, I brought back a few childhood hobo pie classics and did what I do – spruced it up a bit! Here are some of my fire-tested and approved recipes. Trust me, they’re a nice break from grilled cheese and pie filling!
CAMPari® Caprese Sandwich (inspired by the Grilled Cheese)
Fresh Mozzarella cheese
Campfire Croque Monsieur (inspired by the Hot Ham and Cheese)
Black Forest Ham
Mustard (I like grainy)
*Dip your sandwich in raw, whipped eggs right before putting in the Hobo pie maker*
Monkey S’more (inspired by, well, the s’more)
Mini Marshmallows or Marshmallow Fluff
*Tip – don’t forget to butter the outside of your bread so that it doesn’t stick to the hobo pie maker. Hope you enjoy this as much as my nephew did!
