Mom's Best Recipes: Campari® Pizza Sauce

Homemade SUNSET® Campari® pizza sauce

This Mother’s Day, instead of curating a menu for mom, let’s salivate over her best recipe. The one that you crave multiple times a year and would drive 7 hours just to taste the way she makes it. There is something special and so comforting about mom’s food.

There is one dish of my mom’s that I crave every week - her homemade pizza. And when I say homemade I mean from scratch, not the knock-off premade crust and sauce packet. She makes the sauce homemade, the crust homemade, and tops it with our favorite toppings and a healthy dose of freshly grated mozzarella cheese. In my elementary school days when my mom, dad, and brother were my best friends (we lived in the boonies) we would hang out every Friday night. We would rent a movie on the way home from school and arrive home to mom’s homemade pizza dough rising in the kitchen. This made for the best start to the weekend.

I don’t know about you, but my mom and I are pizza - sauce fanatics. I will likely not even eat the pizza if it is not smothered in sweet-saucy goodness. I like when I can order the dollops of sauce on my pizza to really give it that PIZAZZ. Anyways, mom of course makes the best sauce with fresh tomatoes, Sweet & Saucy Campari® Pizza Sauce. And we don’t just put some sauce on. We smother the crust with sauce and hopefully have some left over to spoon directly in my mouth.

Once we have filled it up with enough sauce to fill a small pond, we give it a nice sprinkle of fresh grated mozzarella and parmesan. We like when we can see our toppings. Toppings always differ from week to week, but we always add fresh veggies. I bet you can guess our other favorite topping… tomatoes!! I know, so predictable.

When it really comes down to it, I not only crave the pizza but I crave the Friday night family time that is so hard to come by these days. When nothing else in the world mattered except hanging out with mom and making pizza for our rented movie; those were the days.

This Mother’s Day, it doesn’t really matter what we’re eating, just as long as we get to eat it with mom.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Sweet & Saucy Campari® Pizza Sauce

2 lbs Campari® tomatoes, chopped

3 Tbsp olive oil

1 6 oz. can tomato paste

3 Tbsp fresh basil, chopped

2 Tbsp garlic, chopped

1 Tbsp honey

Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

In a large saucepan, heat up the olive oil over medium-high heat, then add the chopped Campari® and garlic. Let cook for 5 minutes, or until the tomatoes start to cook down.

Add the tomato paste and stir into the tomatoes. Let the sauce cook on low for 30 minutes. The sauce should be thick by this point.

Stir in the honey, basil, salt and pepper and let cook for 5 more minutes. Let cool for at least 30 minutes. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

You can put this sauce on your pizza or smother it on a crusty baguette.
