A new year means a new opportunity to implement your food and fitness goals. While we can easily recommend some top-quality produce to incorporate into your diet :), we know that sticking with resolutions can be a bit more challenging. Luckily, we’ve come up with 5 things to keep in mind as you (and we) move into a hopeful and successful 2018!
1. Set Reasonable Goals
A big reason people fail to achieve diet or exercise goals is that they try to go to extremes. There is no good reason to go from 0 – 100 right away. Slowly integrate healthy ingredients and habits into your daily routine. If you tend to eat a lot of starch and meat, try reducing your consumption of these heavy items and start integrating heathy grains, fruits, and vegetables into your meals. This tapering method makes for a smooth transition and will allow you to gradually change your routine into something maintainable.
2. Plan for the Week
If you’re like most of us, last-minute meal decisions often result in unhealthy food choices. Avoid the temptation of fast food and vending machines by taking some time each weekend to plan out your meals for the work/school week – your wallet and your waistline will thank you.
3. Maintain Portion Control
Over the holidays we may or may not have decided that one, uncut tray of rice crispy treats counts as one serving… Now, we know that’s a bit excessive but the point here is that the serving size of your meal has a strong impact on your diet. Sometimes the Tupperware you have lying around the house is deceptively sized and will result in you accidentally overeating. Meal prep kits are pretty affordable now and happen to also offer perfectly portioned compartments for lunch, dinner, and snacking.
4. Enlist Accountability Buddies
Call on the power of your friends and family to hold you to your personal goal commitments. While our desire to follow-through is strong, there will be plenty of times when we may decide to let it all go. Having loved ones and co-workers to check in with can make all the difference.
5. Have Fun
Resolutions should be motivating and fun. Everyone is different but try to make sure to enjoy yourself while meeting your desire to improve yourself. Challenge a friend to a weekly “goal-off” or make a point to have a cheat day once a week. There are plenty of smart devices and fitness apps that make these challenges engaging and rewarding.
